About Use Own Domain Wix Export
Got a domain from somewhere else? You can absolutely use it with Wix. You don't have to buy through them.
First, the prerequisite: you need a Wix premium plan. Free sites are stuck with the wixsite.com subdomain. To connect your own domain, pay for premium. Starts around $17/month.
Alright, here's how to connect your domain:
Step 1: In your Wix dashboard, go to Settings then Domains. Click "Connect a Domain You Already Own." Enter your domain name.
Step 2: Wix will give you DNS records to add at your registrar. Usually an A record pointing to Wix's IP address, plus a CNAME record for www.
The records look something like this:
A record: @ pointing to 23.236.62.147 (or whatever IP Wix provides)
CNAME record: www pointing to your-site-name.wixsite.com
Step 3: Log into your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, wherever). Find DNS management or DNS settings. Add the records Wix gave you.
Step 4: Back in Wix, click verify or continue. Wix checks if the records are set up correctly. This might take a few minutes.
Step 5: Wait for propagation. DNS changes spread across the internet gradually. Could be instant, could be 48 hours. Most of the time it's under an hour.
Alternative method, using name servers:
Instead of adding individual DNS records, you can point your entire domain to Wix's name servers. This hands all DNS management over to Wix.
Go to your registrar's name server settings. Replace the current name servers with Wix's: ns0.wixdns.net and ns1.wixdns.net (or whatever Wix specifies).
This method is simpler but means you manage everything through Wix. If you need DNS records for email or other services, you'd set those up in Wix's dashboard instead of your registrar.
Troubleshooting common issues:
Domain shows registrar's parking page, DNS hasn't propagated yet. Wait longer.
Domain shows old site, clear your browser cache or try incognito mode. DNS might be updated but your browser cached the old version.
Wix says "domain not connected", double-check the records. Typos are common. Make sure you're editing DNS for the right domain if you own multiple.
SSL certificate errors, Wix provides free SSL but it takes a bit to issue after domain connection. Give it a few hours.
Email stopped working, if you were using your registrar's email, switching to Wix nameservers might have broken it. You'll need to add MX records in Wix's DNS settings.
One tip: before changing anything, screenshot your current DNS records. If something breaks, you can put them back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a domain I bought elsewhere with Wix?
Yes. You don't need to buy your domain through Wix. Domains from GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, Cloudflare, any registrar works. You just need to update DNS settings.
Do I need to transfer my domain to Wix?
No. You can keep your domain at its current registrar and just point it to Wix. Transferring is optional, some people prefer having everything in one place, but it's not required.
Why isn't my domain working after connecting to Wix?
DNS changes take time to propagate, anywhere from 30 minutes to 48 hours. If it's been longer, double-check your DNS records match what Wix specified. Common mistakes include typos or wrong record types.
