About Transfer Wix Site to Another Account Export

Moving a Wix site to another account isn't difficult. But there are gotchas people miss.

First, understand what transfers and what doesn't. The site itself, design, pages, content, images, that all moves. But subscriptions? No. Domains? Separate process. Connected apps? Some might break.

Let's go through the transfer process:

Step 1: Make sure the destination account exists. The person receiving your site needs a Wix account. If they don't have one, have them sign up first.

Step 2: Go to your Wix dashboard. Find the site you want to transfer. Click the three-dot menu next to it.

Step 3: Select "Transfer Site" from the menu. Enter the email address associated with the receiving account.

Step 4: Wix sends a transfer request to that email. The recipient needs to log into their Wix account and accept the transfer. They usually have 48 hours to respond before the request expires.

Step 5: Once accepted, the site moves to their account. It disappears from yours. They now control it.

Important things to know:

Premium plans don't transfer. If your site has premium features, the new owner sees a downgraded version until they buy their own plan. Your subscription stays active but no longer connects to that site.

Domains need separate handling. If you registered a domain through Wix, it's tied to your account, not the site. You'll need to either transfer the domain to the new account (internal Wix transfer) or point it to their site from your account.

Business apps and integrations might break. Apps like Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, and connected third-party services often have account-specific data. Some transfers cleanly, some doesn't. Test after transfer.

Contributor access is different. If you just want someone to edit your site without owning it, add them as a contributor instead. Go to Settings > Roles & Permissions. This keeps the site on your account.

Why would you transfer a site? A few common scenarios:

You built a site for a client. Now they want to manage it themselves. Transfer ownership.

You're selling a business and the website goes with it. Transfer to the buyer.

You have multiple Wix accounts and want to consolidate. Transfer sites to one account.

You're handing off a project to someone else. Transfer saves them from rebuilding.

One alternative worth considering: if the new owner doesn't need Wix specifically, export the site first. Our tool grabs all pages as static HTML. They could host that anywhere without needing a Wix account or subscription at all. Sometimes that's the simpler path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer a Wix site to someone else's account?

Yes, Wix allows site transfers between accounts. The receiving account needs to exist first. You initiate the transfer from your dashboard, they accept it from theirs.

Does the premium plan transfer with the site?

No. Premium subscriptions stay with the original account. The new owner needs to purchase their own premium plan if they want those features. Your subscription doesn't move.

Will my domain transfer with my Wix site?

Domains registered through Wix can be transfered to the new account, but it's a separate process. You'll need to transfer the domain specifically, it doesn't automatically follow the site.

Can I transfer a Wix site with an active subscription?

Yes, but the subscription stays with you. The new owner gets the site without premium features. They'd need their own plan. Consider canceling your subscription after transfer to avoid paying for nothing.
