About Leave Weebly Export

Leaving Weebly isn't hard. Leaving without losing everything? That takes a plan.

Here's the order that works: export your site, move your domain, set up new hosting, then cancel Weebly. Do it out of order and you risk downtime or losing content.

Step one: export your site. Weebly's built-in export creates a partial archive, some HTML, some content, but not a working website. You need a tool that renders pages like a visitor sees them and saves the complete output.

Our exporter does this. Enter your Weebly URL, we crawl every page, grab images and CSS, package it all up. The result works independently, drop it on any server and your site runs.

Step two: move your domain. If you bought a domain through Weebly, it's locked to your account by default. Go to Settings, then Domains, find the unlock option. You'll get a transfer authorization code.

Take that code to a better registrar. Namecheap charges $13/year for most domains. Cloudflare does at-cost registration, usually $8-10/year. Start the transfer there. Takes about a week.

Step three: set up hosting. For static HTML files, free options abound. GitHub Pages works great, upload your files, point your domain, done. Netlify has a drag-and-drop deploy that takes 30 seconds.

If you want traditional hosting, any $3-5/month shared host handles static files fine. You're not running WordPress or databases, requirments are minimal.

Step four: point your domain to new hosting. Update DNS records at your new registrar to point to wherever you're hosting. Each platform has guides for this. Usually takes 10 minutes plus DNS propagation time.

Step five: cancel Weebly. Once your exported site is live and your domain points to it, you're done with Weebly. Cancel through Account Settings. No need to pay another month.

One warning: Weebly forms, e-commerce, member areas, anything dynamic, won't work in the export. You'll need Formspree for contact forms, or Snipcart if you were selling products. Static HTML is just files.

Total cost of leaving Weebly: $0 if you use free hosting, or $3-5/month for traditional. Compare that to Weebly's $10-26/month. The savings add up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download my Weebly site as HTML?

Not through Weebly directly, their export options are limited. Use a tool that renders your pages in a browser and saves the HTML output. You get a complete, working copy.

How do I move my domain away from Weebly?

Go to Weebly Settings > Domains, unlock your domain, and get the transfer code. Then initiate a transfer at your new registrar (Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc). Takes 5-7 days to complete.

What happens to my Weebly site when I cancel?

Your site goes offline when the subscription ends. No archive, no free tier to fall back on. Export everything before you cancel, there's no going back after.
