About Change Wix Domain Name Export

Changing your domain on Wix depends on what you're starting with and where you want to end up.

Scenario 1: You're on the free subdomain (yoursite.wixsite.com) and want a real domain.

You'll need a premium plan. No way around it. Wix doesn't let free sites use custom domains. The basic plan runs about $17 per month, that's what unlocks custom domain connections.

Once you have premium, you can either buy a domain through Wix or connect one you already own. Buying through Wix is simpler, everything's in one dashboard. But their domain prices are often higher than dedicated registrars.

Scenario 2: You have a domain but want to switch to a different one.

Go to your Wix dashboard. Find "Domains" in the settings. You'll see your currently connected domain. Add the new domain, either buy it or connect one you own.

Once added, set the new domain as primary. This tells Wix which domain should be the main one shown in browsers. The old domain can stay connected as a redirect, or you can remove it entirely.

Setting up a custom domain you already own:

You'll need to change DNS settings at your domain registrar. Wix gives you two options, pointing or name servers.

Pointing uses A records and CNAME records. You add specific records to your DNS that tell browsers where to find your Wix site. It's the more common method.

Name servers hand everything over to Wix. You change your domain's name servers to Wix's servers, and they handle all DNS from there. Simpler but less flexible.

Wix walks you through this with a setup wizard. It's actually pretty straightforward, they show you exactly what to enter at your registrar.

One important thing: DNS changes take time. Could be 30 minutes, could be 48 hours. Usually somewhere in between. Your domain might show errors temporarily while changes propogate.

If you're changing domains for branding reasons, consider keeping the old one connected and redirecting. That way anyone who bookmarked the old URL still reaches your site.

And if you're changing because you're leaving Wix entirely? Export your site first, then worry about domains. Our tool can grab all your pages as static HTML, that way you don't lose your work in the transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my free Wix subdomain?

Yes, but only once. You can rename your yoursite.wixsite.com address in the dashboard settings. After that, you'd need to connect a custom domain instead.

Do I need a premium plan to use a custom domain on Wix?

Yes. Free Wix sites only get the wixsite.com subdomain. To connect your own domain, you need at least the basic premium plan, currently around $17/month.

What happens to my old domain when I switch?

You can keep it connected or disconnect it. If you disconnect, the old domain stops pointing to your Wix site. You'd need to set up redirects if you want visitors to the old domain to reach the new one.
