About Cancel Wix Domain Export

Canceling a domain subscription on Wix is not the same as canceling your website subscription. These are separate things.

Your domain, the yourname.com part, is registered through Wix acting as a domain registrar. The website is hosted on Wix's platform. Two different services, two different subscriptions.

Here's what most people get wrong: they cancel their Wix website subscription and assume the domain is handled. It's not. That domain keeps renewing annually until you explicitly cancel it.

Or worse, they cancel the domain renewal without transferring it first. Then the domain expires. Then someone else registers it.

Don't be that person.

The right way to cancel your Wix domain:

First, decide if you want to keep the domain. If yes, transfer it to another registrar before canceling. Namecheap, Cloudflare, Google Domains, doesn't matter. Just get it out of Wix first.

To transfer: go to your Wix dashboard, find "Domains" in the menu. Select your domain, click "Transfer Away from Wix." You'll need to unlock the domain and get an authorization code (sometimes called an EPP code).

Take that code to your new registrar. Start a transfer request. Pay for another year of registration (transfers usually include a one-year extension). Wait 5-7 days. Done.

Once the domain is transferred, you can cancel the Wix domain subscription without worrying. There won't be anything left to renew.

If you don't want the domain at all:

Just turn off auto-renewal. Go to Domains in your Wix dashboard, click your domain, find the auto-renewal toggle and switch it off. The domain stays yours until the current registration expires, then it's released.

Warning though, popular domains get snatched up fast. If you've built any brand recognition, someone might grab your old domain and do who-knows-what with it. Consider keeping it even if you're not using it actively.

One more thing: domain cancellation refunds are rare. Wix's refund policy doesn't typically cover domain registrations since they pay the registry upfront. Don't expect money back.

Transfer first. Then cancel. That's the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I cancel my Wix domain without transferring it?

The domain stays registered until it expires. After expiration, there's a grace period, then a redemption period (costs extra), then it becomes available for anyone to register. You could lose it permanently.

Can I cancel auto-renewal and keep my domain?

Yes, turning off auto-renewal just stops future charges. You keep the domain until the current registration period ends. But you should transfer it to another registrar before that happens.

How long does a Wix domain transfer take?

Usually 5-7 days, sometimes faster. You need to unlock the domain, get the authorization code from Wix, and initiate the transfer at your new registrar. The process involves some waiting.
